Home Improvement Projects That Make Moms Happy
Finding the right gift for the woman who has made such an impact in your life (or, if we’re talking about your wife, the lives of your children) can be tricky and does a bouquet of flowers, while lovely, truly express how much she’s loved and appreciated? To be honest, for most moms that would likely be enough. But what if, this year, you presented your mom with a present that she won’t be expecting? We’re talking about the gift of home improvement!
With Mother’s Day fast approaching, we’ve put together a few, truly unique ideas that might make the mother in your life smile a little brighter next month!
Paint her favorite room
Adding fresh color to the walls of her favorite room is a great way to celebrate your mom. Take her favorite space and make it more relaxing with a tranquil blue or green, or bring a new, livelier energy with sunny yellow. You can also use paint to make her room feel larger or cozier. Really, you can accomplish any vibe you want with a coat or two of paint. And for bonus points, frame and hang artwork made by her children or grandchildren.
Before you tackle this project, here are a few things to consider:
Are the walls in good shape?
What kind of paint are you going to use?
Do the walls need to be primed?
How many coats do you think it’ll take to cover the old color?
Do you have brushes, rollers, and other tools to accomplish the job?
While painting a room can be accomplished on a tight budget, we encourage you to evaluate the space and make sure you have the time, skills, and funds to complete the project. You really don’t want to present mom with a half-done project.
Give the gift of a closet makeover
Most women dream of a closet that offers all the storage solutions – a place for every item. Unfortunately, due to time constraints or just never getting around to it, many moms continue to have disorganized closets that don’t always accommodate all of their clothes, shoes, and whatnots (there’s always extras in a mom’s closet, trust us). Installing a storage system is another great way to show mom how much she is appreciated by her family.
There are plenty of options on the market so make sure you research thoroughly and be sure to measure the space before you make a purchase. If you’re a skilled carpenter, you may want to consider a custom option – build a closet that is uniquely her. As is the case with painting a room, be sure to count the cost and know what preparations you’ll need to undertake to get the space ready and what’s involved in creating a dream closet.
Remodel her bathroom
Rather than buy your mother a day at the spa, what if you brought the spa to her?! Remodeling her bathroom to create an oasis in the midst of her busy home is another excellent way to express your gratitude and to give her a few blissful moments of quiet.
A bathroom remodel doesn’t have to be expensive. You can make small tweaks, such as:
Paint the walls
Replace the mirror
Hang wall art
Buy new rugs
Add plants
Purchase an acacia wood or bamboo bath tray
If you want to make the change more dramatic, consider:
Installing a new vanity
Updating lighting
Replacing the old toilet
Adding more storage
Obviously, the suggestions just offered require more work and will be more of an investment than the ones previously mentioned. Again, we would be remiss if we did not urge you to consider your time, your skillset, the tools available to you, and of course, your budget for this project. Also, depending on where you live, you may need to check to make sure that you don’t need a permit for the home improvement project.
