2022 Kitchen Remodeling Trends

Happy New Year! We hope this blog post finds you in good health and with high hopes for 2022. We certainly would like to see a return to “normal” but as COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the Greater Birmingham metro area, it does appear that 2022 has not veered from last year’s course too much- at least not yet. In other words, we’re still spending more time at home than not. Rather than lament about circumstances we can’t change, we’re here to turn lemons into lemonade. Since you’re limiting time away from home, why not spend this year making some improvements that make you want to stay put. Let’s start with the kitchen.

What industry experts are saying about kitchen remodeling in 2022

According to this article on realtor.com, homeowners throughout the country are focusing their attention on kitchen remodels and are either in the middle of one or planning one. As the article states, the improvements made to kitchens and the ones that are in the works have been or will be changes to the layout (i.e., removing walls) and updates to the electrical and plumbing in the kitchen.

As for cosmetic changes, those are happening too. Here’s a look at two of the kitchen remodeling trends experts are predicting for 2022.

Kitchen islands are getting more real estate

Kitchen islands have always been a multipurpose surface, allowing families to prepare meals, dine, tackle homework, and answer work emails, etc. This year it looks like kitchen islands will be growing to create even more space. Another trend relating to kitchen islands – multiple islands. Two islands are giving people the ability to separate the food preparation from the other functions they’re being used for.

Neutral colors in the kitchen

White continues to dominate across the board, with most homeowners preferring white kitchen cabinets, white countertops, white backsplashes, and white walls. Gray appears to be the alternate color of choice. As for appliances, stainless steel ones are favored.

More homeowners are turning to the pros for their kitchen renovations

Should you DIY or hire a home improvement pro for your kitchen remodel? According to the 2022 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, the number of homeowners hiring professionals has increased from 85% in 2021 to 89% this year. Given that some of the improvements include changes to the structure and work with electricity and plumbing, this makes complete sense. At Serve One Construction, we encourage property owners to make the choice that best fits their situation but also urge caution and recommend completing a detailed assessment of ability and resources needed. We realize that prices are going up for materials and labor, and while taking a stab at the project yourself could save you some money, it could also have the opposite effect.
